Current Status of the Elderly¡¯s Swallowing Disorder and Changes in Quality of Life Related to Swallowing after Swallowing Education in the Elderly in the Community: Around the Gangdong-gu area

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of swallowing related quality of life in the elderly who are at risk of swallowing disorder in community.

Method : This study conducted a total of 98 elderly with a risk of swallowing disorder after assessing the risk of swallowing disability in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, and conducted a quality of life before and after swallowing education using the quality of life assessment tool. The SPSS 23.0 version program was used to identify changes in the quality of life related to swallowing.

Result : After swallowing education, the swallowing ability of the subjects was improved and the quality of life related to swallowing was also statistically significant. However, there was no statistically significant difference in food choice and mental health items among items related to swallowing quality of life.

Conclusion : There was a significant difference in swallowing related quality of life and risk of swallowing in swallowing education among the elderly who had risk of swallowing disorder. In order to improve the quality of life of elderly people in community, swallowing risk assessment and education are needed and various studies on the prevention of swallowing disorder in community elderly people in the future are also needed.
